Our lab recognizes that diverse perspectives push the boundaries of scientific knowledge, leading to greater scientific innovation and discovery. Yet, we also acknowledge that academic STEM fields, including our own, perpetuate the historical marginalization of underrepresented groups, reflected by a lack of diversity, equity, and inclusion. To disrupt these systems of privilege and inequality, the LaDage lab welcomes, supports, and advocates for the unique contributions of all aspiring scientists, including those from diverse backgrounds (race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, first generation status, disabilities, immigration status, and other personal identities).
Our commitment is evidenced by :
- Recruitment of undergraduate researchers based on a holistic evaluation rather than GPA
- Recruitment of students whose backgrounds will enhance the scientific endeavors of the lab
- Assurance that all undergraduate researchers in the lab have equitable opportunities for personal and professional development
- Listening to and accommodating the needs of each student researcher
- Accountability to and for each other
- When safe, we highlight questionable behavior and, in turn, we are receptive to constructive criticism
- We all make mistakes (including scientific mistakes!) but our goal is to rectify and learn from our mistakes
Dr. LaDage is a member of some traditionally-excluded groups in STEM (women, LGBTQ+, first generation college student), and this has laid the foundation for her personal commitment to equity and inclusion in the research process. She is currently a member of the DEI in Undergraduate Research committee and the Rainbow Science Network.
